Refresh and try again. Erik of het klein insectenboek by Godfried Bomans. Willem van den Oever ‘s review Nov 15, Nine-year-old Erik discovers one night that after dark all of the paintings in his bedroom come to life.
After a hilarious discussion with his deceased grandparents – who show the boy what the advantages are of being painted as a full insectenbok, rather than simply a portrait — Erik has but one wish.
To enter Wollewei; a painting above his bed showcasing all kinds of wonderful insects living in the field. Instantly he is able to climb over the frame and, being shrunken down to ant-size, tumbles into a world of very stuck-up wasps, snails running hotels, nihilistic burying beetles and a very aggressive spider.
Eric in the Land of the Insects
Like any good fairy tale, there is an entertaining story at the surface, while the mannerisms of the various insects provide an interest look at human behavior on a deeper level.
Greed, materialism and pride are matched with the appropriate species and show that Wollewei varies little in its society from our own culture.
Most of it goes only as far as light satire; this is no philosophical analysis of the human culture. Is it a high note in Dutch literature as many high schools in the country make it out to be?
